The incident happened on Sunday afternoon, April 23 in Yonkers, when police responded to the area of Van Cortlandt Park Avenue between Thurman Street and Lakeside Drive and found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound in his stomach, according to Yonkers Police Lieutenant Dean Politopoulos.

The victim was then taken to a local trauma center in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The area of the shooting was then blocked off and authorities began a criminal investigation into the incident. So far, some ballistics evidence has been found, Politopoulos said, adding that police are still working to discover exactly what happened and who was responsible.

Preliminary information has indicated that the shooting was some sort of dispute between known parties that escalated to violence.

The 17-year-old victim, whose name was not released, was later arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm that was recovered at the scene of the shooting, according to Politopoulos.

Politopoulos also added that police do not believe there is a risk to public safety, and that they do not believe it was a random act of violence.
